Kate Stehr is a sculptor and collage artist with a Master of Philosophy in Creative Arts Research, an Advanced Diploma of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Honours). Her two key artistic pursuits are sculpture and collage, with each practice distinct yet continually informing the other.

Her work explores storytelling, mythology, architecture and environmental concerns through playful and often surreal forms. Working predominantly with hand-carved and reclaimed timber, Kate combines traditional making techniques with found objects, creating sculptural works that play with line, structure, movement and abstraction.

Across her practice, Kate is interested in the ways stories and ideas can be translated into physical form. Her ladder and architecturally inspired works invite the eye to travel through and over seemingly impossible structures, while her Scribing Tools series explores the relationship between narrative, mark-making and the written word. More recently, her work has turned towards phytoplankton and the natural world as a way of reflecting on broader environmental concerns.

Through these varied bodies of work, Kate brings together material experimentation, storytelling and a sense of play, creating objects that encourage curiosity and invite the viewer to imagine their own narratives.
